The essential oil distributing company, doTERRA, has developed an effective three step skin care regimen using plant extracts and essential oils to treat acne. This regimen, called HD Clear, consists of a foaming facial wash made of a proprietary blend of essential oils and vitamins including vitamin C, Eucalyptus, Orange Peel Extract, Tea Tree Oil, algae extract and amino acids. The wash is followed by a calming oil blend and a nourishing moisturizing lotion.
Plant extracts nourish and purify skin, giving it what it needs to stay healthy, while essential oils calm inflammation and maintain skin’s natural barrier. By controlling inflammation, one of the root causes of acne, HD Clear sends acneic skin on the road to recovery. In addition, HD Clear opts for natural and safe preservatives like sodium levulinate and citric acid instead of the more commonly used and parabens, which are highly carcinogenic.

Laura M., a massage therapist in her mid-thirties has struggled with acne since her twenties. She did not break out in her teens but noticed that her skin problems began after high-school. She has struggled with acne ever since that time and says that she has “tried everything get her skin under control” with no luck.
Since her skin problems are most likely due to hormonal acne they are definitely harder to treat. Laura didn’t have any luck with the Proactive, Murad, and Philosophy skincare products, nor with prescription antibiotics, or topical prescription creams. She said that all of these treatments made her skin red, peeling, or worse. She says that at the time she was embarrassed to go outside. Fast forward a year later after she has been using the DoTerra three step system and her skin is almost completely clear. She says that her skin stays mostly clear except occasional breakouts on her chin.
She says that the three step system worked quickly without irritating her skin the way other treatments did. She found that she cannot use the oil blend everyday or her skin becomes reacts with redness, so she only uses it two to three times a week, but uses the other two steps daily. She recommends the product to anyone struggling with acne.

Step 2- HD Essential Oil Blend Topical Blend
This doTERRA Topical essential oil blend can be used as a spot treatment or applied to targeted areas after cleansing to breakup acne-causing sebum and balance moisture levels. This oil blend may be the most effective against cystic acne in the doTERRA family. It is not necessary to use every day.
This is a proprietary blend of the following six lipid soluble essential oils:
- Black Cumin Seed Oil- an anti-inflammatory that contains the acne fighting element zinc
- Oil of Ho Wood- an antimicrobial with properties similar to camphor
- Eucalyptus Leaf- a common ingredient in some mouthwashes and cough medicines that also destroys bacteria
- Litsea Berry- made from the fruit of an evergreen shrub, helps to balance oil levels
- Melaleuca Leaf (tea tree oil)- one of the most effective natural topicals against acne.*
- Geranium Plant Oil- made from the geranium flower, was once used by ancient Egyptians as a beauty treatment, it controls oil levels and kills germs.
*There is a plethora of scientific studies backing the efficacy of Melaleuca oil (otherwise known as tea tree oil) in the improvement of acne due to its anti-inflammatory and antiseptic quality. Subsequently it has long been touted as a natural acne healing ingredient. In fact, Tea tree oil is so effective it is used in natural skin products all over the world. It reduces redness, calms blemishes, and kills acne causing bacteria.
Step 3- HD Clear Facial Lotion
This non-greasy formula is made with botanical extracts, essential oils, and antioxidants. In addition, it contains niacinamide and alpha-hydroxy acids (AHA’s), which are a first lines of defense against acne. One such alpha hydroxy acid in the lotion is lactic acid. This is the most moisturizing of the AHA’s and works to exfoliate skin from the inside out as it’s small molecular size penetrates deeply.
Another fun fact about lactic acid is that it is a derivative of sour milk. (Perhaps the ancient Egyptian ruler Cleopatra was onto something by taking fermented milk baths to preserve her skin.) Simply apply lotion morning and night after using the foam cleanser and treating with topical oil blend for optimal hydration.
Many people claim success with the HD Clear system, reporting more hydrated, clearer, brighter skin with less acne lesions after just a few weeks of use. Some with particularly sensitive skin have reported mild irritation with daily use and subsequently have better success by lessening their use to three to four times per week.
