Wash. Rinse. Repeat. These are the instructions we see on a shampoo or conditioner bottle, but what about when it comes to washing your face? Well, we definitely want to wash it, but how many times a day? What cleanser do I use? What should the water temperature be? These are all great questions to ponder when considering what to do with the feature that is the first impression that people see when they meet you. And it is important, but it is also important to know what to use on your skin and how often. We are here to give you the low down on how to wash your face, what to use, and even some natural ways to help freshen your skin.
1) Get the right cleanser for your skin type
If you have sensitive or dry skin you will want to use a creamy cleanser. Something that looks like you want to eat it when you put it in your hands. Naturally Serious Major Moisture Gentle Cream Cleanser is a good one to start with. It has natural ingredients and you can get it at Sephora.
Now, if you have oily skin, you want to use a gel or foamy cleanser. Make sure not to have too much fun playing with the foam that you forget to wash your face. CeraVe Foaming Cleanser with Avene Cleanance Gel cleanser are great ones to start with and are dermatologist recommended. You can find the CeraVe at any drug store and the Avene gel cleanser on Amazon.
For those with acne-prone skin, you want to use a cleanser that has Salicylic acid, Glycolic acid, and Benzoyl peroxide. A great one to start with is Neutrogena Oil-Free Salicyclic-Acid Acne Fighting face wash. You can get this at any drug store and it is dermatologist recommended.
2) How to wash your face the right way
The right amount of time to wash your face is about 20-30 seconds. Washing it for too little time will not clean all the dirt, oil, and dead skin off, and doing it for too long can strip the natural oils from your skin (especially if you are using an exfoliant). It is recommended by dermatologist to not put so much cleanser on your face that you think it will make it stay clean for another decade. All you want to do is put enough in your hands to clean your entire face, including the T- Zone (the nose and in between brow area) and the U- Zone (around the jaw).
Step by step, you want to put the warm water on your face, put the cleaner in your hands, rub the cleanser gently on the face in a circular motion (making sure to get those zones), and then pat dry with a nice clean towel.
3) Water temperature
That hot water that we are so accustomed to might feel nice but it generally is not good for the skin on your face. Using hot water causes the dilation of blood vessels and the breakage of delicate tissue. It also strips the skin of its natural oils and causes acne, according to dermatologists. So, the water temperature that you want to use is lukewarm. This is going to keep the integrity of your skin and help get it nice and clean.
4) Two is the magic number
By this point, you’re probably saying alright, got it! But, how many times a day do I need to do this? Well, the magic number is two. Once in the morning and once in the evening, and I will tell you why. When you sleep oils from your hair get on your skin and bacteria from your saliva, so washing your face once in the morning is crucial. As well as, if you are using any night creams- you want to make sure to clean that off in the morning. So, that is the first time to wash it. The second time to wash it is at night time when you have been exposed to all gross particles flying around in the air all day and now that is on your face.
You do not want to over wash your face though, so two times is the ideal amount, any more than that can cause too much irritation and acne to the skin. If you need to wash your face again because of sweat from a gym sesh just use a face wipe, dermatologist-recommend the Neutrogena face wipes for best use, and you can find those at any drug store.
5) Natural Face Cleansers
Milk- It has lactic acid that removes dead skin cells. The milk fat and proteins hydrate the skin. Try using whole milk for the full effect. All you have to do is pour some milk into your hands and gently cleanse for 20-30 seconds with lukewarm water.
Oatmeal- It gently exfoliates the skin to get any dead skin or dirt off. All you have to do is grind ¼ cup of oatmeal and put it in an airtight container. Then, when you are ready to use just mix it with lukewarm water, cleanse, and pat dry with a fresh clean towel.
Lemon- This is great for oil skin types. All you do is put a little bit of lemon in milk or yogurt, cleanse, then pat dry with a towel. Don’t forget the moisturizer after this one!
All in all, it can seem like a grueling task to have to do this every day. But, just think about it, the more you take time to take care of yourself and your skin the happier you and your skin will be!
